Feature Review: Armello
Armello: The Board Game brings the same colorful world and compelling characters from the Armello video game to life on the tabletop. The King of Armello has fallen ill to a dark and mysterious force called the Rot. The disease slowly consumes his body and soul, twisting him into madness. Banes, corrupted monsters of the Rot, roam unchecked. In response, the Great Clans have called on their Heroes to claim the throne. The Heroes will need to undertake Quests across the land to gain Experience, collect Treasures, and recruit Followers if they hope to slay the King. Or, if their exploits can earn them sufficient Prestige in the eyes of the Armellians, they may win the crown outright! In Armello: The Board Game, players take on the roles of Heroes to quest, battle, and employ a bit of trickery to gain Prestige and become the new ruler of Armello! Armello is in part a deck builder, meaning each Hero starts with their own deck of cards and adds to it over the course of the game. It is also an area control game, as Heroes travel across the map to stake their claim on Settlements and complete Quests. In addition to building a deck and exploring the map, Heroes will take part in battles by rolling dice. Gaining additional dice to roll and card effects that manipulate them will help you overcome your opponents in battle. Your success in Armello is determined by Prestige. Prestige can be earned by completing Quests and winning battles. There are 2 paths to victory: Regicide Victory (reach 30 Prestige, then enter the Palace and slay the King) and Proclamation Victory (Win immediately when you reach 70 Prestige). If you’re already familiar with the Armello video game, that’s great! You’ve got a head start with many of the board game’s mechanics.
